August Alsina Heats Up Spring With Debut Album “Testimony”

It has been an unbelievably cold winter, but from the sweet beckons of August Alsina’s debut album, Testimony, our spring might be warming up faster than we expected.  Testimony is the perfect combination of sweet stories juxtaposed with Alsina’s bravado style in his rap-singy voice.

Testimony ListeningLast night, press and label heads flocked to the Hudson hotel to preview the 21 year old’s whispers of sweet nothings. Hosted by Angela Yee, she and August went through certain tracks that were already crowd favorites. They began with the title track, “Testimony,” but when Pusha T and Fabolous entered the room, August switched to their tracks, furthering the crowd’s amusement.

In the R&B space, there is a significant lack of male involvement on the radio and with Testimony, Alsina might be the critical push the genre needs. The album has a general feeling of discontent, but the catchy melodies and the clutch features with Rick Ross, Pusha T and Fabolous add to this new comer’s genial aesthetic. His age is an incredible advantage to this new era of R&B because who better than a 21 year old boy donning a red bucket hat knows more about heartache and heart-break (besides Taylor Swift)? After listening to the released singles, cuffing season might be extending to spring.

He’s courageous to put such big hip-hop artists on his album, yet he isn’t out-shined by any of them. While it was difficult to efficiently listen to the album in this space, it was obvious that this album is about him and not his features. To add to the emotional time this is for Alsina, Def Jam president Shawn Pecas presented him with his first gold plaque for his single “I Luv This Shit.” Tears welled up in his eyes as DJ Khaled stood behind him with Pusha T and Fabolous at his sides (put this moment in another song August!!). This is an amazing start for Alsina, but we’ll see where the summer takes him, as the album is projected to sell 20-25K in its first week.
