Things Every New Yorker Should Do: Amateur Night At The Apollo

New Yorkers may live in one of the most glamorous cities in the world, but sometime we take it for granted. We don’t visit and enjoy some of the gems of the city.

Amateur Night At The Apollo is an event every New Yorker should check out. Not only is it fun, it’s historic.

The Apollo opened its doors in 1914 and introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934. Such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Bill Cosby, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and countless others began their road to stardom on the Apollo stage. Amateur Night winners over the years have amazingly included the likes of  Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey, Sarah Vaughn, and Ruth Brown.

Amateur Night at the Apollo is probably one of the few places you are encouraged to either boo or cheer on a performer–and maybe help discover the next big talent.
