Centered around Yarbrough’s classic and popular songs and poems from the seminal album “Iron Pot Cooker,” the live show featured Nana Camille performing some of her work, plus performances from actresses Althea Vyfhuis and Gha’il Rhodes Benjamin, and vocalist Tulivu Donna Cumberbatch. Also, there was a screening of video clips on Yarbrough’s life, as directed by filmmaker Nahdege Ptah of MAAT Films (who doubles as the “No Matter What” artistic director).

Nana Camille Yarbrough explains the essence of the program:

Now more than ever, the Black/African family is in need of love, compassion, and healing. The only way for that to truly come about is for us to look deeply at ourselves, our cultural expressions, and our traditions and values. When we look inside, we will love much of what we see and see other things that will be disturbing and challenging. We must handle what we have been given as a people and not be handled by it. So we have to love our past, our present, our future, generation after generation. My job as a griot is to help in doing that. This is why I am doing this work!”
