Inauguration Day 2021: What’s Next? Former Democratic Campaign Adviser Spencer Critchley Has Some Thoughts

Spencer Critchley served as a Democratic campaign adviser for both of Obama’s presidential campaigns, often working alongside President-Elect Joe Biden. So he knows a thing or two about presidential transitions.

The author of “Patriots of Two Nations: Why Trump Was Inevitable and What Happens Next,” Critchley has studied the historical context dating back to the founding of the profound division within the two leading political ideologies in the United States. The chasm between the two groups has never been more pronounced than it’s shown to be today.

“When democracy is working, we should be able to have strong political differences without judging each other morally — but that’s because democracy only works when our differences stay within the boundaries of morality,” he explains of the attack on the Capitol. “In a democracy, there’s no legitimate position that justifies corruption, bigotry, or cruelty, for example. Those things can’t be a matter of opinion; they’re immoral. And there’s no legitimate position that justifies an attack on democracy itself, such as we saw most violently…but which has been mustering for a long time. Where Trumpism could lead has been the subject of increasingly urgent warnings since Trump announced his candidacy — and long before that. Trump didn’t come from nowhere.”
