Maya Wiley, president and CEO of The Leadership on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement on President Biden’s Executive Order on Racial Equity:
“We applaud the Biden administration’s clear commitment to advancing and protecting civil and human rights for all communities. At a time when civil rights are under attack from forces that seek to turn back the clock on the important strides this country has made and many Americans fear the weakening of our democracy, every act of government to protect our civil rights is critically important. We have seen critical executive orders from this administration that take seriously the idea that the federal government must play an active role in ensuring that all have access to opportunity. The order’s focus on appropriate staffing on equity issues, addressing bias in algorithms and artificial intelligence, and promoting data equity and transparency are all vital steps forward. But executive orders are only as strong as their implementation. We will continue to work on the full implementation of this and all civil rights executive orders as soon as possible.”
