Research shows that natural sounds can significantly improve mental wellbeing by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. HAYPP, in partnership with psychologist Dr. Rebekah Wanic, explored which soothing sounds people are most drawn to and their ideal listening times for mental health benefits.
The study revealed that four of the top five soothing sounds are water-based, with thunderstorm sounds leading at 409 million YouTube views, followed by rainfall (399 million), fire crackling (197 million), and ocean waves (151 million). Running streams rounded off the top five, with 43 million views. These water sounds, often considered forms of white noise, help people block out distractions and find peace.
Dr. Wanic notes that birds singing, city noise, waterfalls, and running streams are ideal for mornings, helping to energize and activate the mind. During the day, steady sounds like ocean waves or thunderstorms can provide calming relief amidst busy environments. In the evening, sounds like chirping crickets or crackling fire help create a soothing atmosphere conducive to winding down.
The study highlights how natural sounds can have a profound impact on our mental wellbeing, offering people an accessible way to relax and reduce stress. By experimenting with different sounds at various times of the day, individuals can discover the most effective ways to incorporate these calming elements into their routine.
