High-energy ballroom dance, laugh-out-loud comedy, and tangled family dynamics take center stage this fall when the Off-Broadway production “FALSE STEPS” waltzes into the Theatre at St. Clements in Manhattan for a limited three-week engagement through September 28.
Presented by A Ballroom Comedy LLC and co-written by Candace H. Caplin and Kim St. Leon, FALSE STEPS blends farce, romance, and dazzling choreography into a fast-paced, dance-fueled theatrical experience. With original music and lyrics by Jesse Corbin and choreography by Ronny Dutra, the production promises to deliver both heart and humor as it pirouettes through a whirlwind of love, secrets, and sequins.
At the center of the story is Rae Applebaum, a struggling playwright whose life takes an unexpected turn when her recently widowed mother, Sophie (played by Caplin), falls head-over-heels — and heels-over-head — for Paulo, a charming and much younger ballroom dance instructor portrayed by real-life champion Ronny Dutra. As tensions rise and suspicions grow, secrets unravel, and a retired NYPD homicide detective is brought into the mix. What follows is a hilarious tango of maternal clashes, romantic entanglements, and unexpected revelations.
The cast features an impressive lineup of stage and screen talent: Sarah Hogewood (Kiss Me, Kate) stars as Rae, and Jason Kennedy (Law & Order: SVU) plays the detective who finds himself drawn into the family’s chaos. The show also boasts a spectacular ensemble of world-class dancers, including Elizabeth Cuevas (World and National Champion), Milos Jadzic (Four-time Latin Champion), and Vanda Polakova (winner of Dancing with the Stars Slovakia), ensuring audiences will witness breathtaking ballroom choreography up close.
Directed by Kim St. Leon and Ronny Dutra, FALSE STEPS features scenic design by Harry Feiner, lighting by Ethan Steimel, and sound design by Sean Haggerty.
