Film at Lincoln Center has announced that Bradley Cooper’s much-anticipated comedy-drama Is This Thing On? will serve as the Closing Night selection of the 63rd New York Film Festival, making its world premiere at Alice Tully Hall on Friday, October 10. Cooper and key members of the cast, including Will Arnett and Laura Dern, are scheduled to attend. The festival runs from September 26 through October 13, presented in partnership with Rolex.
The film follows Alex and Tess Novak, portrayed by Arnett and Dern, a couple navigating the emotional complexities of a midlife separation while raising two young sons. Alex’s unexpected pivot into stand-up comedy in New York City’s West Village provides the film’s central arc, allowing Cooper to explore themes of personal reinvention, friendship, and resilience. Co-written by Cooper, Arnett, and Mark Chappell, the screenplay draws inspiration from British comedian John Bishop’s true story.
Cooper’s direction balances naturalism and humor, giving his actors room to inhabit their characters fully. The supporting cast is a stellar mix of talent, featuring Andra Day, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, Sean Hayes, Peyton Manning, and Amy Sedaris. Additionally, local New York stand-ups—including Chloe Radcliffe, Reggie Conquest, and Jordan Jensen—bring authenticity to the city’s comedy scene. The film is produced by Lea Pictures and Archery Pictures and distributed by Searchlight Pictures.
“We are honored and humbled to premiere our film at the New York Film Festival,” Cooper said. “NYC injects an energy into every aspect of filmmaking that just can’t be replicated. On behalf of Will, Laura, and the entire cast and crew—we can’t wait!”
Dennis Lim, NYFF Artistic Director, added, “Is This Thing On? is a film of many dimensions and surprises: a fond tribute to New York City’s comedy scene, a sensitive study of midlife discontent, and a modern-day comedy of remarriage, pitch-perfect in its balance of humor and feeling.”
Cooper, who gained acclaim for A Star Is Born and Maestro, continues to cement his reputation as a filmmaker capable of blending heartfelt storytelling with commercial appeal. His production company, Lea Pictures, focuses on creating transformational feature films and content across media.
Tickets for the Closing Night premiere and the festival’s full slate are available via NYFF Passes, with single tickets for the general public on sale September 18 at noon ET. Pre-sale access is available to FLC Members and Pass holders.
