Sag Harbor’s waters came alive on August 9 as the 15th Annual Antigua & Barbuda Hamptons Challenge Regatta set sail, fusing high-level competition with Caribbean flair. Drawing an enthusiastic fleet of sailors from across the region, the event offered not only prestige but also a coveted prize: an all-expenses-paid trip to Antigua to compete in the world-renowned Antigua Sailing Week 2026.

Under near-perfect summer skies, spectators and sailors alike reveled in the day’s competition before gathering for a stylish awards gala at The Bell & Anchor. Beyond the thrill of racing, the regatta underscored its commitment to community with the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) donating $5,000 to i-tri, a local nonprofit that empowers middle school girls through triathlon training and mentorship.

For organizers and officials, the regatta embodies more than sport. Hon. Charles Fernandez, Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation, and Investment, emphasized its cultural resonance: the race symbolizes the enduring ties between Sag Harbor and English Harbor, two coastal communities with rich maritime traditions.

Now firmly established as one of the Northeast’s premier sailing events, the Hamptons Challenge has become known for blending elite sailing with philanthropy and island hospitality. Colin C. James, CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, noted its importance to the island nation’s tourism strategy, highlighting how it helps showcase Antigua and Barbuda as a top-tier sailing destination while forging meaningful connections with travelers.

This year’s winning skipper, Lee Oldak, brought extra drama to the celebration. After competing in every regatta since its inception, Oldak finally clinched victory on his 15th attempt, steering his boat Purple Haze to the top. He and his crew will now carry their success to Antigua’s famed regatta stage.

Guests at the gala enjoyed Caribbean-inspired cuisine, rum cocktails, and live music, immersing themselves in the warmth and vibrancy of Antiguan culture. The ABTA also hosted a luncheon for VIP travel advisors, where U.S. Director Dean Fenton praised their collaborative efforts and emphasized the importance of relationships in promoting Antigua and Barbuda’s luxury travel experiences.

Representatives from The Hut on Little Jumby Island and Blue Waters Resort & Spa were also in attendance, showcasing the island’s luxury offerings to advisors and media.

As the sun dipped over Sag Harbor, participants toasted another successful regatta — a celebration of racing, camaraderie, and cultural exchange that continues to strengthen the bridge between the Hamptons and the Caribbean.
