Labor Day Weekend 2025 was a historic moment for HBCU football as Howard University narrowly defeated Florida A&M University, 10–9, at Hard Rock Stadium in the Invesco QQQ Orange Blossom Classic (OBC). With 22,455 fans in attendance and nationwide broadcast on ESPNU, the matchup marked the most attended HBCU game of Week One and showcased the deep-rooted legacy between the two programs, recalling both the inaugural 1933 OBC and their 2023 Celebration Bowl clash.

While the score kept fans on the edge of their seats, the OBC’s influence extends far beyond the gridiron. The 2025 Classic awarded $66,000 in scholarships to HBCU students, continuing its mission to foster educational opportunities and empower the next generation. Executive Director Kendra Bulluck-Major emphasized that OBC weekend is about community, culture, and celebrating Black excellence.

The event’s impact extended into professional development and community engagement with a robust lineup of activities throughout the week. Career and networking opportunities included the Allstate Career Recruitment Fair and the Invesco QQQ Careers in Sports & Entertainment Symposium, connecting students and alumni to industry leaders.

Community and culture were front and center with the Pickleball Tournament, Commissioner’s Welcome Reception, and the Tobacco Free Florida Fan Fest, featuring live performances and interactive experiences for fans of all ages. Attendees also enjoyed celebratory gatherings like the Annual OBC Denim Party, the Official OBC After Party, high-energy day parties, and the OBC Cheer Clinic, highlighting the vibrancy of HBCU traditions.

Honoring heritage remained a central theme. Unique to Miami Gardens, the OBC paid tribute to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (Divine Nine) during in-stadium festivities, underscoring the connection between athletics, culture, and community pride.

“The Orange Blossom Classic is more than just a game,” Bulluck-Major said. “It’s about uplifting HBCU students, celebrating Black culture, and creating spaces where legacy meets opportunity. Each year, we see our athletes, fans, and students come together for a weekend that inspires and empowers.”

From scholarships to cultural programming, networking opportunities, and a celebration of HBCU heritage, the 2025 OBC once again proved why it is one of the premier HBCU sporting events in the nation. With Howard narrowly claiming victory and a weekend full of unforgettable experiences, the Orange Blossom Classic continues to cement its place as a flagship event for HBCU excellence.
