New Children’s Book Encourages Kids to Be Helpers, Not Scrollers

As students across New York City head back to school, author Dave Grunenwald hopes his latest book will inspire them to swap screens for service. His new release, “Lucas and Emily’s Food Bank Adventure,” aims to teach young readers the importance of empathy, kindness, and community involvement—values that can sometimes be overshadowed in today’s digital world.

Written for children ages 5–10, the book tells the story of two best friends, Lucas and Emily, who decide to volunteer at their local food bank. What begins as a simple day of sorting canned goods and packing lunch bags turns into a meaningful lesson about helping others. Along the way, they meet new people, learn about food insecurity, and discover that small acts of kindness can have a big impact.

“In a time when screens dominate our attention, I wanted to show kids that real connection and adventure happen when we look up and give back,” said Grunenwald. “Volunteering doesn’t have to be boring or serious—it can be an adventure.”

The story is both heartwarming and practical, offering parents and educators a tool to discuss social responsibility without being heavy-handed. Grunenwald’s use of humor and relatable characters helps children understand that they, too, can make a difference. The book also opens the door for families and schools to plan their own volunteer experiences, showing that compassion is most powerful when paired with action.

“Lucas and Emily’s Food Bank Adventure” is the sixth title in Grunenwald’s “Lucas and Emily’s Adventures” series, which celebrates the everyday moments that strengthen family bonds. From cooking and gardening to exploring nature, each installment encourages intergenerational learning and shared experiences.

In addition to the children’s series, Grunenwald created the Grandparent Merit Badges books—available in both English and Spanish—which invite kids and grandparents to complete fun activities together and earn badges for their efforts.

Beyond storytelling, Grunenwald uses his platform to advocate for community support. “We should all help our local food banks—whether by donating money, food, or time,” he said. “The need is enormous. People should put down their phones and spend time helping others.”

Lucas and Emily’s Food Bank Adventure is published by Halo Publishing and is available now. It’s an inspiring reminder that compassion, not scrolling, can make the biggest difference of all.
