The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the award placements for the 2025 Student Academy Awards during a ceremony held in New York City, celebrating emerging filmmakers from around the globe. The event took place at the Ziegfeld Ballroom with the support of longtime Academy partner Rolex and brought together students, industry leaders, and Academy members for a night spotlighting the future of cinema.

Now in its 52nd year, the Student Academy Awards continue to serve as a key pipeline for new talent. This year’s competition drew 3,127 submissions from 988 colleges and universities worldwide, reflecting the growing international reach and prestige of the program. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor delivered remarks during the ceremony, while presenters included Lou Diamond Phillips along with filmmakers Craig Brewer, Jon M. Chu, and Alex Woo.

Winners were announced across four categories: Alternative or Experimental, Animation, Documentary, and Narrative. In Alternative or Experimental, Gold went to The Song of Drifters by Xindi Zhang from the University of Southern California. The Animation Gold award was presented to A Sparrows Song by Tobias Eckerlin of Film Academy Baden Württemberg in Germany. Documentary honors were led by Tides of Life from Tatiana McCabe of the University of the West of England Bristol, while the Narrative Gold award went to Dads Not Home by Jan Saczek from the Krzysztof Kieslowski Film School in Poland.

Several institutions earned first-time recognition this year, including the University of Copenhagen, Gobelins, the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, London College of Communication, and the University of the West of England Bristol. Their inclusion highlights the expanding geographic diversity of the Student Academy Awards and the global nature of emerging film talent.

All winning films are now eligible to compete for the 98th Oscars in the Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, or Documentary Short Film categories. Past Student Academy Award recipients include influential filmmakers such as Spike Lee, Pete Docter, Patricia Cardoso, Patricia Riggen, and Robert Zemeckis. Collectively, former winners have gone on to earn 69 Oscar nominations and share 15 wins, underscoring the program’s role as an early indicator of cinematic excellence.

Established in 1972, the Student Academy Awards remain a cornerstone of the Academy’s mission to nurture new voices and create pathways into the film industry. With continued support from partners like Rolex, the program reinforces its commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, and the next generation of storytellers.
