November 10, 2025 marked a major milestone for Mexico’s tourism sector as the Fideicomiso de Promoción Turística del Estado de Nayarit (FIPROTUR), the Tourism Promotion Trust of the State of Nayarit, was appointed to the Global Board of Affiliate Members of UN Tourism for the 2026–2029 term. The announcement was made by UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili during the organization’s 26th General Assembly in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

At the same gathering, Nayarit also received the designation of “Supportive Partner Destination,” an honor reserved for destinations that demonstrate strong alignment with UN Tourism’s values and make meaningful contributions to its global initiatives. Together, the two recognitions represent one of the highest distinctions a destination can achieve within the United Nations tourism framework.

The appointment places Nayarit among an elite group of global institutions shaping the future of tourism worldwide. Board members include major international organizations such as Tripadvisor, Expedia Group, IFEMA Madrid, ICCA, Madrid Destino, the Saudi Tourism Authority, Red Sea Global, Turkey’s Tourism Promotion and Development Agency, and Japan’s JTB Corporation. Out of more than 500 affiliate organizations globally, only three were directly appointed by the Secretary-General: Madrid, ICCA, and Nayarit, underscoring the state’s exceptional standing in responsible, inclusive, and sustainable tourism.

As a member of the UN Tourism Board, Nayarit will hold voting rights and play an active role in defining global tourism priorities from 2026 through 2029. This includes participation in the development of international policies related to sustainability, investment, innovation, and long-term sector resilience.

“This recognition reflects the leadership of Governor Dr. Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, who has made tourism a public policy with a human and social purpose,” said Nayarit’s Secretary of Tourism, Juan Enrique Suárez del Real Tostado. “Nayarit is not only growing — today it inspires the world and proudly carries Mexico’s name to the highest international forums.”

During the Affiliate Members plenary session, UN Tourism highlighted Nayarit’s consistent collaboration, participation in high-impact projects, and commitment to responsible tourism when awarding the “Supportive Partner Destination” distinction. The recognition further reinforces the state’s reputation as an engaged and forward-thinking global partner.

“Receiving both distinctions — a seat on the Board and recognition as a Supportive Partner Destination — marks a historic moment for our state’s tourism development,” Suárez del Real Tostado added. “It is a source of pride for Mexico that Nayarit is recognized internationally for its leadership and forward-looking vision.”

With these honors, Nayarit strengthens its role as a global voice for Mexico in tourism, advancing a model that integrates sustainability, social well-being, and regional development while elevating the country’s presence on the international stage.
