Bill Withers’ Legacy Lives On: Family Hosts Book Signing & Reading Series For ‘Grandma’s Hands’

A timeless song becomes a story in “Grandma’s Hands,” the 32-page children’s picture book inspired by the legendary Bill Withers’ iconic 1971 hit. The book, published by independent Freedom Three Publishing, brings Withers’ soulful ode to elders to life through vivid, emotive illustrations, capturing a young boy finding comfort, guidance, and unconditional love in his grandmother’s care.

The Withers family recently celebrated the book with a book signing and reading at Barnes & Noble Clifton on Feb. 21, offering fans an opportunity to meet his wife Marcia Withers, and daughter Kori Withers and honored the enduring legacy of one of America’s greatest songwriters through the eyes of a child. The event was sponsored by BulLion.

Award-winning African-American illustrator R. Gregory Christie lends his signature artistry to the project, translating Withers’ lyrics into a visual journey that celebrates family, heritage, and the enduring influence of our elders. The narrative carries a universal message: the hands that nurture us shape who we become.

Bill Withers’ influence on music is monumental. Known for hits like “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” and “Lovely Day,” Withers’ career earned him three Grammy Awards and recognition in both the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2005) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2015). His song “Harlem” — a raw, soulful tribute to the neighborhood’s summer nights and social struggles — further cemented his deep connection to Black culture and New York City’s musical legacy.

The Withers family remains deeply involved in preserving and expanding Bill’s legacy. Marcia Withers, who managed his career and oversees the family’s publishing companies, played a key role in placing his songs in film, television, and other media, as well as co-producing tribute shows including The Essential Bill Withers at Carnegie Hall. She also serves on the board of the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), supporting charitable causes close to the family.

Kori Withers, a talented singer-songwriter and Columbia University and NYU Tisch graduate, continues the family’s artistic legacy. Kori has performed alongside musical legends like Aloe Blacc, Gregory Porter, and Ed Sheeran, and has co-written tracks for artists including Matisyahu and Judith Hill. She also appeared with her father at his Songwriters Hall of Fame induction and Oprah Winfrey’s “Legends Who Paved the Way Gospel Brunch.”

In addition to the book, fans can watch the Sony Music Official Animated Video of “Grandma’s Hands,” featuring performances by Bill Withers and Kori Withers, adding an extra layer of storytelling and musical charm.

The next book signing will take place on April 17 at the Fifth Avenue Barnes and Noble in NYC.
