Tucked between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is quietly carving a niche as Europe’s go-to destination for travelers seeking authenticity, calm, and local culture away from tourist crowds. Short distances, affordable prices, and rich traditions make it an appealing alternative to heavily trafficked European hotspots.
The country’s appeal was highlighted in a recent “Let’s Get Lost” campaign, which brought over 130 Italian travelers—including journalists, influencers, and contest winners—to Moldova for a curated, surprise itinerary. For many, the country wasn’t on their radar—but within days, it became an unforgettable experience.
“I didn’t know much about Moldova, so it was a very pleasant surprise. It’s an excellent destination for wine lovers and, at the same time, very accessible,” said Valentina Dirindin, journalist at Vanity Fair Italy. Travelers praised the lack of mass tourism, the ability to interact directly with locals, and the convenience of exploring the country without long commutes between attractions.
Wine and gastronomy were central to the itinerary. Participants explored the underground wine cellars of Cricova and Castel Mimi, attended VinOpera performances, and took part in cooking workshops and traditional craft sessions in villages like Butuceni. Kayaking along the Nistru River added a scenic outdoor element to the cultural immersion.
Even the capital, Chișinău, surprised visitors with its relaxed, green, and walkable layout. Travelers noted large parks, a vibrant yet calm nightlife, and a creative energy that felt youthful but unpressured. “It’s a city where you feel comfortable immediately—no stress, lots of greenery and a young, creative energy,” they said.
The campaign also generated significant online buzz, reaching over 80 million impressions and coverage in outlets like La Stampa and Il Foglio, with more than 800 user-generated posts shared across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Natalia Bejan, Director of Invest Moldova Agency, emphasized that Italy is an emotional travel market, and the initiative showcased Moldova as a destination worth exploring.
For modern travelers, Moldova offers a slower pace, authentic rural experiences, and an abundance of wine, food, and culture. Rather than ticking off landmarks, visitors collect stories, taste regional flavors, and enjoy landscapes untouched by mass tourism. As the country gains recognition, it’s clear that Moldova is positioning itself as Europe’s understated gem for travelers seeking authenticity and meaningful exploration.
