A landmark moment in Broadway history is set to return to the stage this fall, as Rent celebrates its 30th anniversary with a one-night-only concert event at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on October 26, 2026. The special performance will reunite original cast members, creatives, and musicians alongside a lineup of yet-to-be-announced guest stars, all in support of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
The anniversary concert will be directed by original helmer Michael Greif, bringing the production back to life with the same creative vision that helped define a generation. He will be joined by original music director Tim Weil and members of the show’s original band, reinforcing the authenticity and spirit of the groundbreaking musical.
Created by Jonathan Larson, Rent first debuted in 1996 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Inspired by La Bohème, the story follows a group of young artists navigating love, loss, and survival in New York City’s East Village during the height of the AIDS crisis. Its raw emotion, diverse characters, and unforgettable score helped reshape modern musical theater, earning both the Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Awards.
This anniversary performance is more than a celebration—it’s a continuation of the mission that inspired the show in the first place. Larson wrote Rent as a tribute to friends and communities impacted by HIV/AIDS, and the benefit performance ensures that legacy remains central. Proceeds from the event will support Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations providing critical services to people living with HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses.
The evening also highlights how far the fight against HIV/AIDS has come—and how much work remains. Advances in treatment have transformed outcomes for many, but organizations like Broadway Cares continue to provide essential resources, from healthcare access to emergency financial support.
Adding to the sense of full-circle celebration, the concert’s artwork has been reimagined by original designers Naomi Mizusaki and Drew Hodges, capturing the disruptive, DIY spirit that defined the show’s original visual identity.
Tickets for the highly anticipated event go on sale June 1, with early access available to select supporters. As anticipation builds, the Rent 30th anniversary concert promises to be both a nostalgic tribute and a powerful reminder of the musical’s enduring message: to measure life in love.
