A poignant and intimate exploration of loneliness, connection, and vulnerability arrives on the New York stage tonight as What Happened Was… begins performances at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre.
Presented by Audible Theater and TOGETHER, the theatrical partnership founded by Sonia Friedman and Hugh Jackman, the production stars Emmy-nominated actor Corey Stoll (Billions, Appropriate) and former Saturday Night Live standout Cecily Strong. Directed by acclaimed theater director Ian Rickson, the limited engagement runs through June 14 for just 33 performances.
The production marks the first major revival of the celebrated play by Obie Award-winning playwright Tom Noonan since his recent passing. Originally written and performed by Noonan, What Happened Was… inspired the Grand Jury Prize-winning film of the same name at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival and has long been praised for its emotional honesty and quiet intensity.
Set in a small Manhattan apartment, the story follows two co-workers meeting for a first date. What begins as awkward small talk gradually unfolds into a moving examination of human longing, emotional barriers, and the risks people take when opening themselves to another person. Against the backdrop of New York City, the play explores themes that remain deeply relevant in an increasingly disconnected world.
Audible Theater and TOGETHER are also emphasizing accessibility as part of the production’s run. Twenty-five percent of seats for every performance will be available for $35 on the day of the show through TodayTix or at the theater box office. The organizations have also renewed their partnership with the Theatre Development Fund (TDF), providing 50 complimentary tickets for every performance to community groups across the tri-state area.
The initiative is designed to remove barriers to theater attendance and expand access to live performance for seniors, veterans, students, educators, and underserved communities. Last year, the partnership helped more than 6,700 people attend productions free of charge.
The creative team includes scenic designers Brett J Banakis and Christine Jones, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Japhy Weideman, and sound designer Mikaal Sulaiman. Casting is by Jim Carnahan.
In addition to its stage run, What Happened Was… will be recorded and released globally as an Audible Original, allowing audiences worldwide to experience the production after its New York engagement concludes.
As Audible Theater and TOGETHER continue their mission of creating intimate, affordable theatrical experiences, What Happened Was… offers audiences a rare opportunity to rediscover a modern American classic through the performances of two acclaimed actors and a story that asks a timeless question: What does it truly cost to let someone in?
