New York City’s beloved summer theater tradition is returning bigger than ever. The Public Theater, alongside returning Shakespeare For the City Presenting Partner Citizens, has announced the launch of SHAKESPEARE FOR THE CITY, a citywide celebration of free theater, community, and culture that will run through September 8.

This summer’s expanded initiative will bring world-class performances and community programming to parks, plazas, and public spaces across all five boroughs, culminating at the newly revitalized Delacorte Theater in Central Park. More than 130,000 New Yorkers are expected to participate in the season’s offerings, which include productions of Romeo & Juliet, The Winter’s Tale, As You Like It, and an original Public Works production to be announced at a later date.

At the heart of the program is The Public Theater’s longstanding commitment to making the arts accessible to everyone. Through the return of its popular Free Shakespeare in the Park ticket voucher distribution program, residents across New York City will have greater access than ever before. This summer, vouchers will be distributed at 50 locations throughout the five boroughs, including twelve Citizens bank branches, helping to ensure that free theater remains available to communities citywide.

“At Citizens, our branches play an important role as trusted, welcoming spaces in the communities we serve,” said Yajaira Hafley, Tri-State Metro Retail Market Executive at Citizens. “By offering citywide ticket distributions at our branches, we’re expanding access to Free Shakespeare in the Park, making it easier for more New Yorkers to experience this iconic cultural tradition.”

The season officially kicks off with a free community celebration at the Delacorte Theater on Saturday, May 30, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature concessions, giveaways, interactive activities, and appearances from Romeo the Raccoon. Visitors can also enjoy activations from partners including Citizens, JetBlue, Venchi, Nordstrom, Montblanc, New York Road Runners, Starbright Floral Design, TodayTix, and Wonder.

The celebration continues throughout the summer with Summer Fridays at the Delacorte. On select Fridays in June and August, New Yorkers are invited to explore the renovated theater through open houses featuring self-guided tours, onstage photo opportunities, family activities, and pet-friendly experiences. Evening picnics will add live music, giveaways, and special guest appearances, creating a welcoming gathering place for the community.

With free performances, expanded access, and a renewed commitment to civic engagement, SHAKESPEARE FOR THE CITY reaffirms a simple promise: great theater belongs to everyone.
