In a legal profession often criticized for being intimidating and difficult to navigate, New York attorney Stephanie L. Nelson is working to change the experience for her clients one case at a time.
Since launching Stephanie L. Nelson Law in September 2023, Nelson has built a growing practice focused on making legal representation more accessible, personalized, and client-centered. Serving New Yorkers facing a wide range of legal issues, she has established a reputation for combining legal knowledge with a hands-on approach that prioritizes communication and trust.
Based in New York City, Nelson’s firm handles matters involving criminal law, family law, employment law, contracts, immigration law, and commercial landlord disputes. Her goal is not only to represent clients effectively but also to ensure they understand the legal process every step of the way.

“Starting my own firm gave me the freedom to handle cases the way I believe they should be handled,” she said. “It allows me to practice law in a way that truly centers the client.”
Before opening her own office, Nelson gained experience across multiple areas of the legal field. Her background includes work in prosecution, compliance, intellectual property law, estate law, litigation, and contract matters. That broad legal experience now helps her address a variety of client concerns with a practical and well-rounded perspective.
Nelson’s journey into law was inspired by a desire to advocate for others and help people navigate difficult situations.
A graduate of the Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Nelson remains active in several professional organizations, including the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association, and the Metropolitan Black Bar Association.
Her commitment to service extends beyond the courtroom. Nelson previously served in the Peace Corps in Uganda, an experience that strengthened her dedication to helping others and working across diverse communities.
