The curtain will stay up a little longer for Broadway’s dazzling spectacle, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, as producers have announced a five-week extension of the Tony Award-winning production’s Broadway run.
Producer Carmen Pavlovic of Global Creatures revealed that the blockbuster musical, which had previously been scheduled to close on July 26, 2026, will now continue performances through Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the historic Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The extension comes in response to strong audience demand for the production, which has become one of Broadway’s most successful shows of the modern era.
By the time it takes its final bow, Moulin Rouge! The Musical will have played 2,297 regular performances and 24 previews, securing its place as the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history.
The production is also welcoming back a familiar face. Broadway veteran Eric Anderson will return to the role of Harold Zidler beginning May 19. Anderson was involved with the musical from its early workshop stages and later portrayed the flamboyant nightclub owner on Broadway for two years. His return follows the departure of Megan Thee Stallion, who concludes her run with the show on May 17.
Since opening on July 25, 2019, Moulin Rouge! The Musical has become a powerhouse attraction, earning critical acclaim and setting box-office records at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The production won 10 Tony Awards in 2021, including Best Musical, and remains the highest-grossing show in the theater’s century-long history.
Directed by Alex Timbers, with a book by John Logan and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, the musical brings the magic of Baz Luhrmann’s beloved 2001 film to life through a vibrant mashup of contemporary and classic music.
The show also holds a unique distinction in Broadway history. It officially recouped its investment in late 2022 and remains the only musical from the 2019-2020 season to have done so while still running. After performances were halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Moulin Rouge! became one of the productions that helped lead Broadway’s return, reopening in September 2021.
Its popularity extends far beyond New York. The musical has entertained more than 12 million audience members across 15 productions worldwide and is currently playing on Broadway, on a North American tour, in London’s West End, Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands, and on a global touring production.
For theater fans eager to experience the spectacle, there is now one final opportunity to enter the world of truth, beauty, freedom, and love before the Broadway production takes its last bow in August 2026.
