Broadway favorite Aaron Tveit is returning to the role that helped make him a musical theater star.
The Tony Award-winning actor will reprise his role as Christian in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” for a final, limited Broadway engagement of 15 performances from August 18 through August 29 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York City.
Tveit originated the role of Christian in the world premiere production and on Broadway, earning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and an Outer Critics Circle honor for his performance. His return gives longtime fans another opportunity to see him play the idealistic songwriter at the center of the romantic musical before the Broadway production closes.
Christian Douglas will return to the role for Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s final Broadway performance on August 30.
Tveit’s return comes after his most recent Broadway appearance as Freddie Trumper in Chess. His extensive stage career also includes starring roles in Sweeney Todd, Catch Me If You Can and Next to Normal, as well as performances in Wicked and Hairspray.
Beyond Broadway, Tveit has built a wide-ranging television and film career. Television audiences have seen him in Schmigadoon!, Earth Abides, American Horror Stories, Graceland, BrainDead and Grease: Live, where he played Danny Zuko. He also appeared as Tripp van der Bilt on Gossip Girl.
His film credits include Les Misérables, in which he played Enjolras alongside Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Eddie Redmayne and Russell Crowe. His other screen work includes Premium Rush, Undrafted, Ghost Town and Better Off Single.
“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” has become a global theatrical phenomenon since arriving on Broadway. The production won 10 Tony Awards in 2021, including Best Musical, and has been seen by more than 12 million audience members across 15 productions worldwide.
Based on Baz Luhrmann’s acclaimed 2001 film, the stage musical combines romance, spectacle and a contemporary soundtrack with classic songs and theatrical showmanship. The Broadway production is directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, with a book by Tony Award winner John Logan and choreography by Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh. Justin Levine serves as music supervisor, orchestrator and arranger.
The production’s design team includes Tony Award winners Derek McLane for scenic design, Catherine Zuber for costumes, Justin Townsend for lighting, Peter Hylenski for sound and Matt Stine as music producer.
With Tveit stepping back into Christian’s shoes for only 15 performances, his engagement gives fans a final chance to see the actor in one of his signature Broadway roles.
