Shyrone and Rebecca Richardson are challenging the idea that a successful marriage happens by chance. After more than three decades together—and a courtship that lasted just three weeks before they married—the pastoral marriage counselors are sharing the lessons they say have helped them build a lasting relationship.
Their new book, Winning Together: 8 Keys to Building a Thriving Marriage, offers couples practical guidance for navigating the challenges, conflicts and changes that inevitably come with long-term commitment.
The Richardsons married only three weeks after meeting. More than 33 years later, they have experienced the highs and lows of marriage while also spending decades counseling other couples. Their experiences form the foundation of a book designed to offer both encouragement and practical strategies for strengthening relationships.
“We’ve seen a lot of marriages fall apart, and we believe that our story can bring hope to any marriage,” Shyrone Richardson said. “We’ve been married over 30 years and have gone through more tests and trials than most, and yet, we are more in love now than when we first met.”
The book arrives at a time when social media can make relationships appear effortless and picture-perfect. The Richardsons argue that the reality of a thriving marriage is far less polished—and far more intentional.
Winning Together explores eight foundational areas of marriage, including communication, conflict resolution and maintaining faith at the center of the relationship. Rather than presenting marriage as a formula for avoiding difficulties, the Richardsons focus on developing habits that help couples work through challenges together.
Each chapter includes concise “Game Plans” that turn the book’s lessons into practical action steps. The exercises are designed to give couples tools they can return to as they encounter different seasons of marriage.
The Richardsons also emphasize that strong marriages are built during ordinary moments. While major milestones can shape a relationship, everyday decisions about communication, forgiveness, faith and commitment can have an equally significant impact.
Their approach combines pastoral counseling with lessons drawn from their own marriage, giving the book a perspective rooted in both professional experience and personal history.
“Our hope is that these principles help couples build marriages that are not only enduring but deeply fulfilling,” Rebecca Richardson said. “Marriage isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about choosing each other, over and over again, even when life gives you a thousand reasons not to.”
Published by High Point Executive Publishing, Winning Together: 8 Keys to Building a Thriving Marriage was released June 22, 2026. The book is aimed at couples seeking to strengthen their relationships, whether they are newly married or have spent decades together.
For the Richardsons, their three-week courtship may have been unconventional, but their 33-year marriage represents the longer journey: learning, growing and continuing to choose each other through every season of life.
