A new film based on the life of Baltimore rapper Tashera “T” Savage is taking a different approach to the familiar story of growing up around the drug trade, focusing less on street life and more on the lasting psychological impact of childhood trauma.
Thru the Eyes of the Hustler’s Daughter follows Savage’s journey from a childhood marked by violence and loss to her efforts to confront depression, inherited trauma and the challenges of breaking destructive family cycles.
The film centers on Savage as a young girl who witnesses the murder of her father and struggles with the emotional aftermath. Her story examines how traumatic experiences can follow children into adulthood and how therapy, creativity and community support can help survivors begin to heal.
Savage said she does not want the film to be viewed simply as another movie about the streets.
“I want people to see the triumph in my story — the overcoming,” she said.
The story also examines Savage’s complicated relationship with her mother, Shontel Greene, a former Baltimore queenpin. As mother and daughter confront the consequences of their past, their relationship develops into a journey involving accountability, forgiveness and the possibility of rebuilding their lives.
Greene has described her own path as one shaped by addiction and circumstances she believed she could not escape. She said she was introduced to the lifestyle at 14 following her parents’ heroin addictions and ultimately came to recognize that another life was possible.
The film’s message is particularly relevant as conversations about youth mental health, trauma and suicide prevention continue to receive national attention. Rather than glamorizing the environment in which Savage and her family lived, the production aims to show the consequences of violence, addiction and unresolved trauma while emphasizing the possibility of recovery.
Written by Andrena Hale and co-written by Peter Allen, the film features Hassan “Iniko” Johnson, known for his work on HBO’s The Wire. Courtney Adele and Varonica Mitchell portray Savage at different stages of her life. The cast also includes rapper B.G., whose real name is Christopher Dorsey, and former NFL player Terrance West.
Savage said the loss of her father remains one of the most painful experiences of her life, particularly because of the circumstances surrounding his death.
At its core, Thru the Eyes of the Hustler’s Daughter is positioned as a story about survival and the difficult process of choosing a different future despite the weight of family history.
The film is currently in production and is expected to debut this fall.
