The Tony Award-winning Best Musical The Outsiders is reaching another milestone, with its Grammy-nominated Original Broadway Cast Recording surpassing 100 million streams worldwide.
Released by Sony Masterworks Broadway, the recording has now been streamed more than 100 million times across digital platforms and continues to attract more than 100,000 streams each day. The milestone comes as The Outsiders enters its third year on Broadway and continues its North American tour.
Based on S.E. Hinton’s beloved 1967 novel, The Outsiders transports audiences to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where teenage Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade and their Greaser friends find themselves caught in a bitter conflict with the wealthier Socs.
The musical explores friendship, family, loyalty, identity and belonging as Ponyboy and the other Greasers struggle to imagine a future beyond the boundaries of their divided community.
The Broadway production currently plays at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York City. Its continued success has also helped propel the original cast recording into the streaming spotlight, introducing the musical’s score to listeners beyond the theater.
The production features a book by Tony Award nominee Adam Rapp and Tony Award winner Justin Levine, with music and lyrics by Tony Award nominees Jamestown Revival — Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance — and Justin Levine. Levine also serves as music supervisor, orchestrator and arranger.
Tony Award winner Danya Taymor directs the production, while Tony Award nominees Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman handle choreography.
The musical has earned strong reviews since its Broadway debut. Critics have highlighted its combination of dramatic storytelling, physical movement and an original score that gives the classic coming-of-age story a contemporary theatrical identity.
The production’s design team includes scenic designers AMP featuring Tatiana Kahvegian, costume designer Sarafina Bush and lighting designer Brian MacDevitt. Cody Spencer handles sound design, while Hana S. Kim oversees projection design.
The Outsiders has also attracted notable Hollywood backing. The Broadway production is produced by The Araca Group, American Zoetrope, Olympus Theatricals, Sue Gilad and Larry Rogowsky, and Angelina Jolie, among others.
The musical premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in March 2023 before moving to Broadway.
Now in its third Broadway year, the production continues to expand its reach through its North American tour while its cast recording introduces the music to a growing global audience.
With more than 100 million streams and counting, The Outsiders has established its score as a success that extends well beyond the theater — giving fans another way to experience the story long after the curtain falls.
