Families looking for a Halloween outing without the scares can head to Orbisonia, Pennsylvania, this fall for the Pumpkin Patch Express, a seasonal experience aboard the historic East Broad Top Railroad.
Powered by a real steam locomotive, the excursion combines fall scenery, pumpkins and old-fashioned harvest activities for a family-friendly day in the mountains of Huntingdon County. The experience offers a different take on Halloween, trading haunted houses and jump scares for a vintage train ride, outdoor games and time spent picking out the perfect pumpkin.
The approximately two-and-a-half-hour experience begins with a 60-minute, nine-mile round-trip journey through the scenic Aughwick Valley. Passengers can choose from enclosed vintage passenger cars, open-air cars or an authentic caboose as the steam train makes its way toward the pumpkin patch.
After arriving at Colgate Grove picnic ground, guests have about 90 minutes to explore the grounds and enjoy a variety of seasonal activities. Families can pick their own pumpkins and take part in pumpkin decorating, hay bale wagon rides, mini-golf, horseshoes and cornhole. A bouncy house and races add more activities for younger visitors, while a fire pit provides a cozy place to relax.
Halloween costumes are encouraged, and each train departure will feature its own costume contest. Food trucks will also be available throughout the event, giving visitors an opportunity to grab a meal or snack during their stay. Adults can stop by the Juniata Brewing Company beer van for a beverage.
The Pumpkin Patch Express is scheduled for select dates in October, including October 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18 and 31, with trains departing at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Tickets start at $28 for adults and $22 for children under 12. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for families planning to attend on a specific date or departure time.
The excursion also includes an accessibility option, with one of the East Broad Top Railroad’s passenger cars equipped for wheelchair access.
