As travelers begin planning their winter getaways, Vilnius, Lithuania, is already preparing to welcome visitors for the 2026 Christmas season.

The Lithuanian capital will officially launch its holiday celebrations Nov. 28 with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, while the Christmas Market in Cathedral Square is scheduled to run through Dec. 27. The city is positioning itself as a more relaxed alternative to Europe’s increasingly crowded Christmas market destinations.

Vilnius’ Christmas tree has earned international attention, reportedly being named the most beautiful in Europe four consecutive years. Each season, designers unveil a new artistic concept, making the tree lighting one of the city’s most anticipated holiday events. Past designs have incorporated themes ranging from fairy tales and birthday cakes to clocks and traditional holiday colors.

The 2026 design remains a closely guarded secret.

The Christmas Market will be centered in Cathedral Square beneath the illuminated tree. Last year’s market featured 48 wooden huts arranged along a promenade, offering visitors locally made gifts, food and holiday treats. Shoppers can expect artisan products such as scented candles, amber jewelry and handmade wooden toys, along with traditional sweets, gingerbread and mulled wine.

The festivities extend well beyond the market. A Christmas train will travel through Vilnius’ illuminated Old Town from Nov. 28 through Jan. 6, offering visitors a festive way to experience the city’s UNESCO-listed historic center. An open-air ice rink in Town Hall Square and a traditional two-story carousel will add to the holiday atmosphere.

The Design Square, scheduled for Dec. 15-20, will showcase handmade products and gifts from Lithuanian designers. Meanwhile, the annual Christmas Run on Dec. 5 will bring runners through the decorated streets.

Vilnius also emphasizes the charitable and community traditions associated with the season. A Charity Market is scheduled for Nov. 28, followed by Maltesers’ Soup Day on Dec. 17. Festive buses will bring holiday activities to neighborhoods throughout the city.

Beyond traditional Christmas attractions, visitors can experience Lithuanian wellness traditions, including sauna rituals, as well as modern spa experiences. The city also offers boutique accommodations, independent artisan shops and restaurants, including Michelin-recognized dining options.

In 2025, Vilnius was named the European Capital of Christmas, further highlighting the city’s growing reputation as a holiday destination.

With its illuminated medieval streets, local crafts, festive food and community-centered traditions, Vilnius offers travelers an opportunity to experience European Christmas without the intensity of some of the continent’s busiest holiday destinations.

For travelers looking ahead to winter 2026, the city’s early announcement provides another reason to put Vilnius on the holiday travel list.
