Wellness travel is moving beyond traditional spa weekends, silent retreats and increasingly familiar cold-plunge routines. A new generation of travelers is looking for experiences that combine adventure, sensory exploration and personal discovery—and The Vessyl in Costa Rica is positioning itself at the center of that shift.
Set across 118 acres of rainforest beneath Arenal Volcano, The Vessyl is an intimate property that brings together nature, adventure, sound, meditation and various systems of self-exploration. The experience has drawn comparisons to Nine Perfect Strangers, although the focus here is less about escaping from everyday life and more about experimenting with new ways to experience it.
Guests can ride horses through the rainforest and into rivers, practice breathwork and meditation, experience cold exposure and participate in vibrational yoga. The property also offers massage, long dinners and opportunities for quiet reflection.
One of its more distinctive experiences is The Frequency Dome, an immersive spatial-audio environment designed to surround guests with sound and vibration. Another, The Harmonic Hearth, combines heat, darkness, sound, vibration and ritual into an evening experience.
The Vessyl’s approach reflects several emerging trends in wellness travel. One is the growing interest in immersive sound experiences, with hotels and retreats increasingly incorporating audio and vibration into their programming. Another is what could be called the “post-optimization vacation”—a desire to step away from the constant tracking, measuring and self-improvement that has become part of modern wellness culture.
The property also blends older practices with newer technology. Guests can explore meditation, breathwork and systems such as Human Design, Gene Keys, the I Ching and numerology alongside spatial audio and other emerging technologies. These practices are presented as tools for self-exploration rather than definitive answers.
That mix may also appeal to travelers who remain skeptical of wellness trends. The Vessyl’s philosophy leaves room for curiosity without requiring guests to embrace every practice.
Adventure is another important part of the experience. Horses, rivers, rainforest hikes, music, fire and communal meals make the property feel less like a traditional retreat and more like an experiential getaway.
The Vessyl was founded by Josh Stanley, co-founder of Charlotte’s Web, as part of his exploration into what it means for people to thrive.
The property is offering hosted press trips October 8–11 and November 12–15, 2026, with additional hosted stays available in January and February 2027.
With its combination of rainforest adventure, immersive sound and unconventional wellness experiences, The Vessyl reflects a broader shift toward travel that is less about optimization and more about curiosity, connection and experiencing something travelers cannot easily find elsewhere.
