Resort Wear Beyond the Resort: Why the Vacation Wardrobe Is Becoming a Year-Round Affair

As summer winds down, wardrobes traditionally make the shift from lightweight dresses and resort wear to heavier fall layers. But warmer temperatures lasting longer and consumers looking for greater value from their clothing are changing that seasonal routine. Today, vacation-inspired pieces are moving beyond the beach and pool and becoming part of the year-round wardrobe.

The shift also comes as fashion moves away from the neutral-heavy aesthetic associated with “quiet luxury.” Color, bold prints and personality are returning to the forefront, giving women more opportunities to express themselves through clothing.

Valerie Perez, a Moroccan designer and founder of luxury resort, spa and leisurewear brand Wrap Up by VP, believes the change reflects how women increasingly approach both fashion and travel.

“Some of the pieces we love most are the ones we discover for a vacation, so why should we wear them for only a week or one season?” Perez said. “Resort wear can move beautifully into everyday life. A long caftan can become an evening look and a printed dress can transition into fall with the right layers. Luxury today is not only about how something looks; it’s also about how confident it makes you feel and how effortlessly it fits into your life.”

The emphasis on versatility comes as consumers rethink how much clothing they purchase and how long they keep it. According to the Public Interest Research Group, the average American purchases 53 new clothing items annually. Extending the life of existing pieces can offer an alternative to treating clothing as disposable or strictly seasonal.

Perez sees resort wear as particularly well suited to that approach. Influenced by travel, art, architecture and the idea of escape, the category naturally lends itself to expressive colors, tropical prints, florals, stripes and relaxed silhouettes.

“Women want to have fun with fashion again,” Perez said. “There will always be a place for beautiful neutrals, but color and print bring an emotion to clothing. They remind you of a destination, a mood or a moment. That sense of escape doesn’t have to disappear just because summer is over.”

Transitioning resort pieces into fall is largely about styling. Lightweight dresses can be paired with knits, denim jackets and closed-toe shoes, while caftans and kimonos can serve as layering pieces. Printed pajamas can be worn as separates, while chemises can take on a new look when styled with boots, tights or outerwear.

The same philosophy is influencing travel wardrobes. Rather than packing for a single destination or occasion, women are increasingly seeking pieces that can be styled multiple ways and worn long after a trip ends.

“It’s really the end of the ‘vacation-only’ wardrobe,” Perez said. “Women want pieces that can take them from breakfast at a resort to the pool, dinner, a flight home and then back into their everyday lives. When something is comfortable, beautiful and adaptable, you naturally find more reasons to wear it.”

Wrap Up by VP embodies that philosophy with dresses, robes, sleepwear, caftans, chemises and other lightweight pieces designed to move between travel, resort and everyday life. With destination-inspired prints and versatile silhouettes, the collection reflects a growing fashion mindset: vacation style no longer has to stay on vacation.
