Artist Aria Joy Prichard Shares Five Tips for Unleashing Your Inner Artist

Ever dreamed of creating a masterpiece worthy of a place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art? Or perhaps you simply want to explore your creative side and discover a new hobby. Whatever your artistic ambitions, nationally acclaimed artist and illustrator Aria Joy Prichard believes everyone has an inner artist waiting to emerge.

Inspired by her upcoming debut children’s picture book, Luna and the Lost Cove, arriving November 10, 2026, through Tiny Torch Books, Prichard is sharing five tips to help people tap into their imagination, embrace creativity and discover their artistic potential.

With a Master of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Prichard has built a creative career centered on original characters, imaginative storytelling and illustration. Through her creative brand, Mermaid Friends, she brings her artistic vision to life while encouraging others to explore the possibilities of creativity.

Her first recommendation is simple: stop comparing yourself to everyone else. Developing an artistic voice means embracing what makes your perspective different rather than trying to imitate someone else’s style.

Second, give yourself permission to experiment. Formal training and years of experience are not prerequisites for creativity. Trying different materials, techniques and approaches can help beginners discover what they enjoy.

Third, find inspiration in everyday life. Favorite places, personal experiences, hobbies and ordinary moments can become the foundation for an original work of art.

Fourth, make creativity part of your routine. Even setting aside a few minutes each day to draw, paint, write or explore an artistic idea can provide a welcome break from everyday responsibilities.

Finally, think like a visual storyteller. Characters, ideas and imagination can transform a simple sketch into an entire world, giving art a deeper meaning and helping audiences connect with the story.

Prichard puts these principles into practice in Luna and the Lost Cove, an enchanting underwater adventure that explores friendship, courage, individuality and imagination.

The story follows Luna, who discovers an old map connected to her grandmother’s tales of a legendary hidden cove. Joined by her best friend, Lemon, she embarks on an adventure that introduces readers to a magical world of mermaids, mystery and discovery.

More than a children’s story, Luna and the Lost Cove celebrates the power of imagination and reminds young readers that even the smallest voice can make a meaningful difference.

For aspiring artists of all ages, Prichard’s message is encouraging: creativity doesn’t require perfection, just curiosity, experimentation and the willingness to begin.
