Deaf West Theatre and Two River Theater Debut ‘Elephant Shoes’ With Exclusive Music Video Release

Deaf West Theatre and Two River Theater have unveiled a first listen to Elephant Shoes, a groundbreaking new musical that blends American Sign Language (ASL), spoken English, and innovative stage technology. The world premiere production is set to debut at Two River Theater through June 28, 2026. To mark the occasion, the companies released a music video for “Safety in Numbers,” a powerful number performed by composer Caroline Kay and signed by Daniela Maucere.

Elephant Shoes, written by Ivan Menchell with music and lyrics by Kay, is directed and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Jeff Calhoun. The production is presented in association with Kevin Ryan and Diane Scott Carter and promises to explore love, communication, and connection in ways that transcend language.

“Safety in Numbers” introduces audiences to Roxy, a gifted coder who finds comfort in her work amidst the chaos of human relationships. Through the lens of ASL and music, the song captures her desire to retreat from uncertainty and find stability in the clarity of numbers.

The story follows Cy, a tech innovator on the cusp of launching a revolutionary device that instantly translates between spoken English and ASL. While his invention has the power to bridge communication divides, his personal struggle to connect with Roxy—his collaborator and secret love—complicates the journey. When his best friend Chris wins Roxy’s affection, Elephant Shoes becomes a modern-day Cyrano tale that questions whether love can rise above barriers of language and emotion.

The full cast for the upcoming production has yet to be announced.
