In today’s hyper-connected world, travelers rely on smartphones more than ever. From snapping photos for social media to navigating unfamiliar streets, everyday actions can silently eat into data allowances — and often faster than expected. New research from Saily, the travel eSIM app, highlights just how much data common travel habits actually consume.
Simple activities like uploading a sunset photo to Instagram use roughly 16 MB, checking Google Maps for a quick route can consume 10–15 MB, and swiping through dating apps abroad can cost 5–10 MB in mere minutes. Even basic communication adds up: a two-minute iMessage conversation can use around 22.8 MB. Longer activities are even heavier on data. A one-hour video call can burn through approximately 300 MB, while streaming music for an hour consumes about 157 MB.
“When we looked at the numbers, some apps stood out as real data guzzlers,” says Vykintas Maknickas, CEO of Saily, in a press release. “Video calls and social media uploads top the list, while navigation apps and taxi services quietly rack up usage in the background. This explains why travelers often run out of data faster than they expect.”
Saily mapped out a “day in data” for the modern traveler. A morning could look like this: checking ChatGPT for breakfast suggestions (~393 KB), a five-minute Google Maps walk (~11.7 MB), posting your brunch photo to Instagram (~16.7 MB), a quick chat with family on iMessage (~22.8 MB), and ordering a ride on Uber (~1.72 MB). And that’s just the start — background apps and poor connections can inflate usage even more, as repeated upload attempts consume additional data.
To help travelers stretch their data, Saily recommends four tips: use trusted Wi-Fi or a quality eSIM plan for large uploads, switch video calls to audio when connections are weak, download maps, playlists, or shows before traveling, and estimate daily usage with a data calculator to avoid mid-trip surprises.
Saily’s research underscores the importance of planning ahead. Whether uploading content, streaming entertainment, or navigating a new city, even small daily actions quickly add up — a reminder that understanding data consumption is essential for a smooth, connected travel experience.
