Children’s Defense Fund Expands Leadership Team to Amplify Impact on America’s Children

The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF), America’s leading multi-issue child advocacy organization, is strengthening its leadership to deepen its commitment to children and youth across the nation. Founded over fifty years ago by Civil Rights icon Marian Wright Edelman, CDF has long championed policies and programs that support child well-being, racial equity, and social justice. Today, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson, the organization is expanding its executive team to enhance its impact during a critical period for children and families.

Brittany Packnett Cunningham

Brittany Packnett Cunningham joins CDF as Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer. With nearly two decades of experience in strategy, public policy, communications, and education, Cunningham has led efforts at Teach For America, BET Media Group, and served on President Barack Obama’s policing task force and Missouri’s Ferguson Commission. Known for her inspiring public presence and strategic insight, she brings a powerful voice to CDF’s mission, advancing partnerships, campaigns, and advocacy efforts on behalf of children nationwide.

Sheri A. Brady

Sheri A. Brady steps into the role of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Having already contributed significantly to CDF’s programmatic development and impact measurement, Brady brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at the Aspen Institute and W.K. Kellogg Foundation. She will now guide CDF’s operations, ensuring the organization remains agile and effective as it scales programs and initiatives across the country.

“To meet the challenges of this moment for America’s children and families, we are building the strongest team possible,” said Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson. “Brittany’s leadership and policy insight, combined with Sheri’s programmatic knowledge and executive experience, will position CDF to advance the conditions for children to thrive, sing, and dance.”

In their new roles, both leaders emphasize the importance of CDF’s legacy and mission. Cunningham noted, “The powerful legacy of CDF is one I hold with deep respect and care…each child deserves to thrive.” Brady added, “I am inspired by the impact our team makes every day and look forward to aligning operations to maximize efficiency and results for children nationwide.”

CDF’s leadership expansion comes as the organization continues to advocate for America’s 74 million children under 18 and 30 million young adults under 25. Through initiatives like the CDF Freedom Schools® program, which operates in nearly 100 cities across 30 states and territories, CDF combines grassroots mobilization, policy advocacy, and educational programs to uplift marginalized communities and advance child-centered public policy.

As CDF strengthens its leadership and operational capacity, the organization reaffirms its commitment to shaping a nation where children flourish, racial equity guides policy, and communities hold the power to ensure the next generation thrives.
