The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority celebrated members of the Caribbean diaspora and longtime supporters of the twin-island nation during its second annual Diaspora Celebration held in Manhattan.

The recognition event honored individuals whose work, advocacy and behind-the-scenes contributions have helped strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s presence in the United States tourism market while promoting the culture and hospitality of the Caribbean destination.

Among those attending the ceremony were Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment for Antigua and Barbuda, along with Dean Fenton and Michelle Lightfoot.

One of the evening’s most notable honorees was Grammy-nominated singer Kathy Sledge, founding member of the legendary group Sister Sledge. Sledge was recognized for her continued support of Antigua and Barbuda and charitable work through the Halo Foundation.

Also honored was Marcia Skyer James for her longstanding partnership with the tourism authority and assistance in securing accommodations for visiting dignitaries and VIP guests.

Veteran steelpan musician Patrick Gomes, known as “Johnny,” was recognized for helping bring Caribbean music and culture to tourism events throughout New York. Gomes is a founding member of the City South Steel Orchestra in the Bronx.

Additional honorees included transportation provider Tabassum Qureshi, business development executive Kim Essen, community supporter Sandra Reid and logistics coordinator Ashton Gregory.

“Tourism is built not only on beautiful beaches and world-class experiences, but on the dedication of people who believe in our destination and give their time, talent, and support to help it succeed,” Minister Fernandez said during the ceremony.

Fenton added that partnerships remain critical to the destination’s visibility and growth in the U.S. market.

“The success of Antigua and Barbuda in the U.S. market is made possible by committed partners and friends who consistently go above and beyond,” he said.

The event also highlighted the important role the Caribbean diaspora continues to play in promoting regional tourism, culture and economic development abroad while strengthening ties between Antigua and Barbuda and New York’s vibrant Caribbean community.
