One of television’s most unexpected collaborations is heading to HBO this summer.
HBO has released a new teaser and first-look images for Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, a seven-episode limited sketch comedy series that brings together comedy icon Larry David and former President Barack Obama in a project unlike anything either has done before.
The series is set to premiere on June 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will also stream on HBO Max. New episodes will debut weekly through the season finale on August 7.
According to HBO, the show’s premise began with an ambitious goal. President Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama wanted to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the nation’s history. Then, as the official logline humorously notes, “Larry David called.”
That simple setup lays the groundwork for a comedy series that promises David’s signature brand of observational humor, social awkwardness, and irreverent takes on American life.
Best known as the co-creator of the groundbreaking sitcom Seinfeld and the star of Curb Your Enthusiasm, David has built a career turning everyday situations into comedy gold. Fans can expect familiar faces from Curb Your Enthusiasm to appear throughout the series, alongside a collection of notable guest stars whose identities remain under wraps.
The project marks a rare creative collaboration between David and Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama. Since its launch, Higher Ground has become a major force in entertainment, producing award-winning documentaries, films, podcasts, and television projects.
The company has earned widespread recognition for productions including the Academy Award-winning documentary American Factory, as well as Rustin, Crip Camp, Leave the World Behind, and American Symphony.
Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness is written and executive produced by David and longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer, who also serves as director. Schaffer previously worked closely with David on Curb Your Enthusiasm, helping shape the show’s distinctive comedic style.
The combination of David’s sharp comedic voice and the Obamas’ interest in exploring American history has already generated significant curiosity ahead of the premiere.
As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, HBO is betting that a little reflection, a little history, and a lot of Larry David may be the perfect combination for a uniquely American celebration.
