Classic Stage Company is putting a bold new spin on beloved theatrical works with a 2026-27 season that blends classic texts, contemporary voices, original music, and fresh interpretations from some of theater’s most exciting artists.
The Off-Broadway institution announced its 59th season this week, unveiling a lineup that includes a reimagined labor drama, two New York premieres, and the return of its popular Rediscovery Readings series.
Producing Artistic Director Jill Rafson described the upcoming slate as a celebration of “classics with a twist,” bringing together innovative artists who are finding new ways to connect timeless stories with modern audiences.
The season kicks off in October 2026 with a highly anticipated revival of Clifford Odets’ Waiting for Lefty. The 1935 play, which centers on New York taxi drivers preparing for a strike during the Great Depression, remains one of the most influential social protest dramas in American theater history.
The production marks the directing debut of acclaimed stage and screen actor Steven Pasquale, who will bring a contemporary approach to the material through original music and arrangements by musical duo Yeller Tooth. The cast includes Tala Ashe, Raffi Barsoumian, Greg Hildreth, and Conrad Ricamora, with additional casting to be announced.
In February 2027, CSC will present the New York premiere of Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, a new musical adaptation of Ed Graczyk’s cult classic play. The production features a book and original concept by Ashley Robinson, music by Dan Gillespie Sells, and lyrics by Shakina. Directed by Giovanna Sardelli and choreographed by Nancy Renee Braun, the musical promises a fresh take on a story that has resonated with audiences for decades.
The season concludes in May 2027 with another New York premiere, Wonder! A Woman Keeps a Secret. Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Talene Monahon, the play reimagines Susanna Centlivre’s 1714 comedy The Wonder: A Woman Keeps a Secret for contemporary audiences. The production will also feature a new original song by Oscar winner Mark Sonnenblick.
Beyond its mainstage productions, CSC will continue its Rediscovery Readings series, this year focusing on “neo-classics”—late 20th-century plays that continue to speak powerfully to today’s audiences.
With a season that balances history, innovation, music, and comedy, Classic Stage Company is once again proving that great theater doesn’t have to choose between honoring the past and embracing the future. Instead, its 2026-27 season aims to do both at once.
