R&B singer Crystal Tamar is ready to make some noise this summer.

The Houston-born vocalist has teamed up with Grammy-nominated producer Kosine for her latest single, “Whachoo Doin?!,” a playful yet empowering anthem aimed at women navigating the dating scene. Released June 19, the track serves as the lead single from her upcoming sophomore EP, This Changes Everything, due later this year.

Built around a hypnotic chopped-and-screwed production style that pays homage to Tamar’s Texas roots, “Whachoo Doin?!” blends modern R&B, island-inspired rhythms, and a healthy dose of attitude. The song delivers a message many women can relate to: setting standards and refusing to entertain the wrong kind of attention.

“‘Whachoo Doin?!’ is somewhat of a woman’s summer battle cry,” Tamar said. “We’re tired of dudes walking up to us wild, so I’m gonna tell it. I want people to laugh their heads off, blow their speakers out, and carry that hook with them in their day-to-day lives because we all have reason to ask, ‘Whachoo Doin?!'”

The single was produced by Kosine, the multi-platinum hitmaker known for his work with Kelly Rowland, Rihanna, Tamar Braxton, Justin Bieber, and Nicki Minaj. Kosine also produced four songs on Tamar’s forthcoming EP.

“She’s serious about her craft,” Kosine said. “She is passionate. She’s never brought a bad idea to me. Whenever she sings something, I’m just like, ‘That’s tight. Let’s record it.'”

Fans may recognize Tamar from her earlier career as a member of Sophia Fresh, T-Pain’s flagship girl group signed to Atlantic Records. During her time with the group, she collaborated with industry heavyweights including Kanye West, Akon, Marsha Ambrosius, and CeeLo Green.

Beyond music, Tamar has built an impressive entertainment résumé. She served as captain of the NFL’s Houston Texans cheerleading squad and later lent her voice to portray Josephine Baker for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Her upcoming project, This Changes Everything, follows her 2019 self-titled debut EP and showcases a sound she describes as “project soul”—a genre-blending mix of vulnerability, confidence, and musical experimentation.

With “Whachoo Doin?!,” Tamar appears poised to deliver one of the season’s most relatable anthems, giving women a catchy soundtrack for setting boundaries while having fun in the process.
