A provocative new musical is preparing to bring one of history’s most recognizable stories to the Off-Broadway stage with SLAM FRANK, an Afro-Latin hip-hop musical inspired by Anne Frank’s story.
Performances of SLAM FRANK begin Sept. 17, with the official opening scheduled for Oct. 4 at the Orpheum Theatre in New York City. The production is set to run through Nov. 30.
Created by Andrew Fox, who provides the music and lyrics, and Joel Sinensky, who wrote the book, SLAM FRANK takes an unconventional approach to the story of Anne Frank. The creators describe the production as an intersectional, multiethnic, genderqueer and Afro-Latin reimagining that uses satire and hip-hop to examine contemporary conversations surrounding identity, privilege and progressive theater.
Fox conceived, composed and co-wrote the musical with Sinensky, drawing inspiration from a 2022 viral social media discussion that questioned whether Anne Frank had ever acknowledged her white privilege. The production imagines a progressive theater company applying contemporary theatrical conventions and political language to The Diary of Anne Frank, resulting in a deliberately provocative theatrical experience.
Olivia Bernábe stars as Anita (Anne), with Amelia Louise Barr as Margot and Alex Lewis as Peter. The cast also includes Austen Horne as Edith, Rocky Paterra as Otto, John Anker Bow as Mr. Van Daan, Jaz Zepatos as Mrs. Van Daan and Walker Stovall as assistant stage manager. Olamide Asanpaola, Ashlyn Combs, Matthew Krob, Isabella Orosco and Keegan Sells serve as understudies.
Sam LaFrage directs, with choreography by Esosa Oviasu and music direction by Alex Harrington.
The production has generated attention for its willingness to use comedy and satire to tackle sensitive cultural and historical subjects. Critics have described SLAM FRANK as a bold theatrical experience and praised its ability to provoke discussion while entertaining audiences.
The creative team includes scenic designer Adam Koch, costume designer Sarah Lockwood and lighting designer Jamie Roderick. Gage Baker serves as sound designer, while Zack Lobel is video designer and Nicholas Ferarri is associate video designer. Devin Orr is props designer and Nikita Chernin is stage manager.
Production management is by Stuart Metcalf, with general management by Evan Bernardin Productions and company management by Carlwell Redmon. Marketing and publicity are handled by Katie Rosin/Kampfire.
With its blend of hip-hop, satire and contemporary cultural commentary, SLAM FRANK is positioning itself as a musical designed to challenge audiences and spark conversation.
