A family safari at Shiviko Kruger is giving children a chance to do more than watch the wildlife. They can become the filmmakers, storytellers and even directors of their own South African adventure.
Located in Greater Kruger, Shiviko Kruger features four exclusive-use villas, each with a private guide and chef. Rather than following a rigid itinerary, families can shape their days around their interests, creating a more flexible experience for parents, grandparents and children traveling together.
One of the property’s most distinctive offerings puts professional filmmaking equipment directly into children’s hands. Young guests can use the same type of equipment Shiviko’s guides rely on, including a Canon EOS R6 Mark II with a 100-400mm lens, DJI cameras and a gimbal. Children decide what they want to film, whether it is wildlife sightings, activities or the atmosphere of their day, and provide their own narration.
Afterward, Shiviko’s videographer edits the footage into a short film that the family can take home. The experience is designed to encourage children to document their adventure without taking them away from experiencing it firsthand.
The filmmaking activity is part of a broader lineup of hands-on experiences. Children can participate in guided walks at Elephant Point Private Reserve, where they can learn about animal tracks and indigenous plants. The Big Five of Kruger National Park are also within a short, guided drive.
Other activities include junior fire-making sessions, where children learn how to safely build and tend a small fire before roasting marshmallows and listening to stories. They can also create bracelets, necklaces and headbands with a traditional bead worker while learning about the meaning behind different patterns and colors.
At the Clubhouse bar, younger guests can make their own mocktails and milkshakes, while marimba lessons introduce them to local musical traditions. Children can also plant and name their own tree with a guide, learning about the relationship between the land and the surrounding community.
Shiviko also personalizes the experience for different age groups. Children ages 0 to 11 and tweens ages 12 to 16 receive separate welcome bags and age-appropriate activities, while evening turndowns can include clay animals, animal fact cards and bedtime treats tailored to individual preferences.
The property’s four villas also showcase different cultural influences. Ekasi draws inspiration from Soweto township culture, while Shaka celebrates Nguni traditions. Pula incorporates Tswana and Sotho heritage, and Thobela reflects Shangaan, Pedi and Venda influences.
At the center of the property, the Clubhouse features a cinema, PlayStation, pool with two slides, gym, sauna and a bar overlooking the Sabie River and Kruger National Park.
