As Hispanic Heritage Month gets underway, a new WalletHub report is highlighting the states that best represent the diversity of the American population, and California takes the top spot.
WalletHub’s 2026 ranking compared all 50 states across six categories: socio-economic, cultural, economic, household, religious, and political diversity. California ranked No. 1 overall, followed by Texas, New Mexico, Florida, and Nevada.
New York ranked No. 6, placing it among the 10 most diverse states in the country. New Jersey came in at No. 7, followed by Maryland, Hawaii and Arizona.
At the other end of the ranking, West Virginia was named the least diverse state, followed by Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Montana, Kentucky, Wyoming, Iowa, Utah and North Dakota.
The report also identified several states that stand out in specific areas of diversity. Hawaii has the highest racial and ethnic diversity in the country, at 2.9 times the level of Vermont, which ranks lowest in that category. California has the highest language diversity, at 2.4 times the level of West Virginia.
Nevada leads the nation in birthplace diversity, measuring 2.9 times higher than Louisiana, which ranks lowest. Louisiana, meanwhile, has the highest religious diversity, at 2.1 times the level of New Hampshire.
“Race and gender are probably the first things that come to mind when people think about diversity, but there’s plenty more that makes this nation diverse. The most diverse states have above-average variety when it comes to people’s ages, birthplaces, languages, jobs, family structures and more. Moving to a diverse state can be an extremely enriching experience as it exposes you to new ideas and new ways of living.”
That broader definition of diversity is reflected in California’s ranking. According to WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo, the state has the nation’s greatest language diversity and the second-highest racial and ethnic diversity. California also ranks second in educational-attainment diversity, second in household-size diversity and fourth in industry diversity.
Experts say diversity can bring both opportunities and challenges. Marybeth Gasman, Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, said diverse communities can foster creativity, cultural richness and economic dynamism, while emphasizing the importance of equitable access to resources.
WalletHub’s findings also point to a connection between diversity and economic complexity. Kent Bausman, Ph.D., a professor at Maryville University-St. Louis, noted that highly diverse states often have higher incomes and GDP, although they also tend to have higher costs of living and greater urbanization.
For policymakers, experts recommend expanding affordable housing, enforcing fair-housing laws, improving public transportation and investing in schools, parks, libraries and community programs that bring residents together.
The rankings offer another look at how diversity continues to shape the nation’s communities, economies and cultural identity.
