A new boutique hotel in Paris is celebrating the artistic legacy of Montparnasse with an imaginative blend of theatrical design, vintage inspiration and contemporary luxury. Le Magnifique, located on rue de la Gaîté in the city’s 14th arrondissement, transforms a former 19th-century theater into a colorful destination inspired by the neighborhood’s creative past.

Created by hotelier Jacques Blanc, owner of the Bellechasse hotel designed by fashion designer Christian Lacroix, Le Magnifique pays tribute to the artists, writers and performers who made Montparnasse a cultural gathering place during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

The property’s design was conceived by French interior designer Vincent Darré, who was born in the 14th arrondissement. Drawing inspiration from the neighborhood’s theatrical history and artistic personalities, Darré has filled the hotel with distinctive details, unexpected decorative elements and references to Parisian cultural landmarks.

The experience begins in the entrance hall, where hand-painted columns evoke the atmosphere of iconic Parisian establishments La Coupole and the former Saint-Germain-des-Prés drugstore. A circus-inspired fresco leads visitors toward a reception area decorated with antique keys, setting the tone for the hotel’s imaginative interiors.

A glass elevator decorated with mermaids, seahorses and starfish connects the property’s five floors. Each level follows a different theme, taking inspiration from settings ranging from the Garden of Eden to the deep sea and the Milky Way.

The individually designed guest rooms continue the artistic approach. Rather than following a uniform hotel aesthetic, each room features its own combination of furniture, lighting, ceramics and textiles, all designed by Darré. The result is a collection of distinctive spaces that emphasize creativity and craftsmanship.

Downstairs, guests will find a swimming pool surrounded by mythological mosaics and opening onto a patio designed to evoke the atmosphere of a Greek palace between the sea and a garden.

At the center of the hotel’s social scene is Le Picabia bar, named in a nod to the artistic spirit associated with Montparnasse. Its atmosphere reflects the neighborhood’s neighboring theaters, with showtimes displayed for guests and a bell announcing the moments before performances begin. A grand piano also provides opportunities for spontaneous late-night entertainment.

Situated at 20 bis rue de la Gaîté, Le Magnifique places visitors within one of Paris’s historic entertainment districts, where theaters, cafés and cultural landmarks contribute to the area’s enduring appeal.

With its theatrical interiors and celebration of local history, Le Magnifique offers travelers a hotel experience that brings the artistic personality of Montparnasse indoors.
