AILEY Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack Makes Children’s Book Debut With ‘Introducing Rhythm’

Alicia Graf Mack, artistic director of AILEY, is bringing the joy of dance, music and self-expression to young readers with her debut children’s book, Introducing Rhythm, arriving November 9, 2026, just in time for National Children’s Book Week.

Featuring vibrant, full-color illustrations by artist Justin Campbell, the hardcover book invites children ages 4 to 12 into an uplifting story about overcoming fear, embracing individuality and discovering the confidence to pursue their dreams.

At the center of the story is Rhythm Rogers, a third-grade class captain who loves dancing but struggles with stage fright. When her school prepares for the Spring Dance Jamboree, Rhythm hesitates to audition, uncertain whether she has what it takes to perform in front of an audience.

As she watches her classmates showcase their talents in ballet, modern dance, hip-hop and other styles, Rhythm begins questioning whether she has a special spark of her own. With encouragement from her teacher, support from her friends and inspiration from music, she eventually finds the courage to take a chance on herself.

The story celebrates the diversity of dance while reminding young readers that everyone has something unique to offer.

“I am so excited to share this story with all the young dreamers out there who are looking to see themselves in stories,” Graf Mack said. She hopes the book will inspire the next generation of movers to discover their own special voice.

The release also reflects Graf Mack’s commitment to connecting young people with the arts and encouraging literacy. She will celebrate the book’s arrival with several interactive events throughout November and December.

On November 14, she will sign books at The Joan Weill Center for Dance, home of AILEY. The following day, November 15, the official launch will feature readings, movement demonstrations and book signings at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Registration is required.

The celebration will continue during the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s 2026-27 season at New York City Center. Following the December 13 and 20 and January 3 Sunday matinee performances, families can participate in Passport to Rhythm, an interactive experience featuring five activity stations inspired by the dance styles in the book: ballet, tap, modern, hip-hop and step.

Led by City Center Teaching Artists, the activities will encourage children and adults to move, listen, create and explore together. Campbell will also participate, while Graf Mack hosts a book signing in the Shuman Lounge.

Introducing Rhythm will be available at the Ailey Boutique, performance merchandise stands and online at IntroducingRhythm.com, where preorders are currently available.

With its message of courage, creativity and self-discovery, the book encourages children to find their own rhythm both on and off the dance floor.
