Josh Gondelman Brings Laughs and Life Lessons in New Comedy Special ‘Positive Reinforcement’ on YouTube

Comedian and writer Josh Gondelman debuted his latest stand-up hour, Positive Reinforcement, with Blonde Medicine releasing the comedy special on YouTube June 27 and the album version on July 11. Known for his warm, upbeat style, Gondelman—whose credits include Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!—delivers an hour that blends self-awareness, observational humor, and a dash of generational perspective.

Directed by Chris Werner (Last Week Tonight, Saturday Night Live), Positive Reinforcement takes on topics ranging from novelty baked goods and pronoun etiquette to creative retirement strategies. Gondelman approaches aging not as a battle to be fought but as a transition to be embraced—albeit with the occasional right to declare that some things are, in his words, “garbage.”

After returning to the stage in 2021 following a pandemic hiatus, Gondelman noticed a shift in his role in the comedy community: no longer the “new kid,” he found himself among the older comics in the room. This subtle change in perspective fueled the material that would become Positive Reinforcement. From fall 2022 through spring 2024, he toured the set nationwide, fine-tuning it for audiences from coast to coast before recording live at The Bell House in Brooklyn.

His aim is to create comedy that’s genuinely enjoyable for a wide audience—something viewers could even watch with their parents, provided they’re “cool parents.” The special is largely free of offensive humor, though Gondelman notes it may ruffle one feather: his former high school basketball coach, whom he jokingly accuses of lying about being able to dunk.

Gondelman’s career spans multiple mediums. He previously served as head writer and executive producer for Desus & Mero on Showtime, contributed to the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and spent five years on Last Week Tonight, where he earned four Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and three WGA Awards. His debut stand-up special, People Pleaser, was released in 2022.

Outside of television, he’s made appearances on Conan, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Late Late Show with James Corden, while also being a familiar voice on NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. Gondelman is the author of the 2019 essay collection Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results, and his writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and New York Magazine.
