Angela Grovey Joins Broadway’s Record-Breaking ‘Chicago’ as ‘Matron Mama Morton’

Broadway’s longest-running American musical, Chicago, will welcome acclaimed stage and screen actress Angela Grovey to the cast as “Matron Mama Morton” beginning Monday, September 15 at the Ambassador Theatre (219 W. 49th Street). Tickets are now on sale at www.ChicagoTheMusical.com.

A powerhouse performer known for her dynamic stage presence and soulful humor, Grovey’s addition marks a new era for the record-breaking musical. Audiences can also catch her reprising her fan-favorite role as “Krystal” in the upcoming third season of Onyx Collective/Hulu’s Reasonable Doubt, premiering September 18. The series stars Emayatzy Corinealdi as a fearless criminal defense attorney navigating personal and professional chaos, with Grovey shining as her fiercely loyal and quick-witted assistant.

On screen, Grovey recently appeared in the animated feature film Spellbound, alongside Nicole Kidman, John Lithgow, and Rachel Zegler. Her extensive television credits include guest roles on Modern Love (Amazon), The Blacklist (NBC), High Maintenance (HBO), Ray Donovan (Showtime), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix), Iron Fist (Netflix), and a recurring role on 30 Rock.

A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Grovey’s love for performing began early, taking the stage as a Lost Boy in Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby. She later honed her craft at Roosevelt University’s Theatre Conservatory in Chicago before breaking out in Tumpie’s Dance at the Stages Festival with her idol, Lillias White.

Her stage career has spanned some of the country’s most prestigious venues. On Broadway, she originated roles in Leap of Faith and Escape to Margaritaville and appeared in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular for two seasons. National audiences have seen her in tours of Newsies and The Play That Goes Wrong, while New York theatergoers will remember her as the lead in Jocelyn Bioh’s Merry Wives in Central Park, now streaming on PBS’s Great Performances.

Offstage, Grovey serves as Executive Director of Broadway Inspirational Voices, a nonprofit dedicated to community outreach and arts engagement programs at Covenant House and the Department of Corrections.

Produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, Chicago features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. The production remains a global phenomenon and a testament to Broadway’s enduring spirit.
