Delta Air Lines is bringing two Mediterranean escapes to its global network with the addition of Sardinia and Malta, offering nonstop service from New York-JFK starting Summer 2026. This milestone marks the first time Delta allowed SkyMiles Members and employees to directly influence the airline’s route planning through its innovative “Route Race” vote.

Over five days of spirited voting, nearly 150,000 participants helped determine the winners. SkyMiles Members chose Sardinia, while Delta employees selected Malta. Recognizing the strong enthusiasm from both communities, Delta opted to add both destinations, giving travelers new summer options in the Mediterranean. To celebrate, the airline is offering limited-time introductory fares to both islands.

Sardinia: Where Beauty Meets Tradition

Sardinia, Italy’s second-largest island, captivated voters with its blend of natural beauty, culture, and wellness. Visitors can expect rugged coastal cliffs, turquoise coves perfect for swimming, and evenings enjoying handmade pasta paired with Cannonau wine under the stars. Beyond its breathtaking scenery, Sardinia is recognized as one of the world’s five Blue Zones, where residents often live past 100 thanks to a lifestyle rooted in good food, active living, and strong community ties.

Travelers will also find traces of Sardinia’s rich history in ancient ruins and charming coastal villages. “Sardinia is one of the most beautiful, relaxing places I’ve ever been. I can definitely see why it’s known as one of the rare Blue Zones,” said Kristen N., Delta’s Senior Manager – Marketing, who visited the island last year.

Malta: A Living Storybook of History and Sun

Malta offers a different kind of Mediterranean adventure—a fusion of history, culture, and sun-soaked relaxation. The UNESCO-listed streets of Valletta, centuries-old fortresses, and megalithic temples older than Stonehenge invite travelers to step into a living history lesson. For those seeking adventure, Malta also boasts stunning turquoise bays, the famous Blue Lagoon, and diving opportunities around historic shipwrecks. Scenic spots like Dingli Cliffs provide picture-perfect sunsets, making it a destination where every corner tells a story.

Paul Baldoni, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning, said, “We are continuing to add more choice and unique destinations for our SkyMiles Members with new service to Malta and Sardinia, two destinations previously unserved from the U.S. Our network is now built not just for our most loyal customers, but by them.”

With this expansion, Delta offers travelers the chance to explore two of the Mediterranean’s most enchanting islands, blending history, culture, and natural beauty into unforgettable summer escapes.

Tickets for Sardinia and Malta nonstop flights from New York-JFK will be available starting Summer 2026, with introductory deals for a limited time.
