This April, Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) will present its signature classic Firebird accompanied by a full live orchestra, performed by the acclaimed Gateways Festival Orchestra, during its 2026 New York season at New York City Center. The performances run April 16–19, with a special Vision Gala on April 17 honoring choreographer Fatima Robinson and media executive Scott Mills.
The collaboration marks a first-time partnership between two legacy institutions: DTH, a globally celebrated dance company founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, and Gateways, the flagship ensemble of the Gateways Music Festival, which convenes 58 Black professional classical musicians from leading symphony orchestras, conservatories, and the freelance community. The orchestra’s full live performance elevates Stravinsky’s iconic score, amplifying the artistry and impact of DTH’s dancers. Renowned conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson leads the orchestra on April 16, 18, and 19, while Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and DTH’s first music director, Tania León, conducts the Vision Gala on April 17.
“To perform Firebird with Dance Theatre of Harlem is a historic cultural moment,” said Alex Laing, President and Artistic Director of Gateways Music Festival. “This partnership celebrates Black artistry across generations and creates a living history in motion.” Robert Garland, DTH Artistic Director, added, “Reviving our beloved Firebird with the Gateways Festival Orchestra honors the rich foundation Arthur Mitchell built and allows us to share its magic with new and returning audiences.”
DTH’s 2026 New York season highlights a dynamic repertory that blends tradition with innovation. Signature performances include William Forsythe’s Blake Works IV, Jodie Gates’ Passage of Being, Robert Garland’s New Bach and Higher Ground, and John Taras’ Firebird. Special themed nights include Dance Community Night, Divine Nine/HBCU Night, and Meet the Ballerina Matinee.
The annual Vision Gala, held on April 17, begins with a 6:30 PM performance at City Center followed by a dinner and dancing celebration at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The evening honors trailblazers in the arts, with DJ D-Nice and MC Kenny Burns providing entertainment. Previous Vision Gala honorees include Misty Copeland, Debbie Allen, Darren Walker, and Jessye Norman.
Dance Theatre of Harlem continues to champion artistic excellence and community engagement through its professional company, studio school, and education programs like Dancing Through Barriers. The partnership with Gateways underscores both organizations’ commitment to celebrating Black artistry while offering audiences transformative cultural experiences.
