The York Theatre is betting big on new musicals for its 2026-2027 season, unveiling a lineup that includes two world premieres, the return of its popular New2NY Series, and a new partnership designed to bring family-friendly productions to the Upper East Side.
The celebrated Off-Broadway institution, known for developing and producing original musicals, announced an eight-show season that blends history, mystery, and adventure while continuing its mission of nurturing new theatrical works.
Leading the lineup is Truly, Howard Hughes, a world premiere musical opening September 9. The production explores the life of the legendary aviator, filmmaker, businessman, and recluse Howard Hughes as he reflects on his extraordinary life during his final moments. The musical arrives with strong momentum after winning the Stanley Drama Award and previously appearing in The York’s development pipeline.
Later in the fall, audiences will get another world premiere with Kilgallen, a true-crime musical centered on famed journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. Known as one of the most influential female reporters of the 1950s, Kilgallen became obsessed with uncovering the truth behind President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Her mysterious death in 1965 remains unsolved, making the story a compelling blend of journalism, politics, and intrigue.
York Theatre Producing Artistic Director Joseph Hayward said the organization remains committed to launching new work while making theater accessible to audiences.
The season will also mark the return of the New2NY Series, which has helped introduce numerous new musicals to New York audiences over the past two decades. Three productions will be announced later, continuing a tradition that has helped launch shows that later moved on to larger productions.
In addition to serving adult theatergoers, The York is partnering with TheaterWorksUSA to bring a trio of family productions to its home at The Theater at St. Jean’s.
Young audiences can look forward to The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System, inspired by the beloved educational series. Additional offerings include The Pout-Pout Fish, based on the bestselling children’s book, and Click, Clack, Moo, the musical adaptation of the popular farmyard tale.
The partnership marks TheaterWorksUSA’s return to a regular New York theater home after years away from the city’s stages.
Founded more than 50 years ago, The York Theatre has built a reputation as one of New York’s most important incubators for new musicals. Its productions have gone on to Broadway, national tours, and commercial runs, helping establish careers and introduce audiences to the next generation of musical theater creators.
With fresh stories, family entertainment, and a focus on innovation, the company’s newest season aims to continue that tradition.
