A new travel experience will give history enthusiasts the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of one of America’s most influential abolitionists.
Black Voice News’ Footsteps to Freedom Underground Railroad Study Tours and Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives have announced the launch of the Frederick Douglass Travel Club, a heritage travel program dedicated to exploring the global history of Black freedom movements. The club’s first offering, the Frederick Douglass in Scotland Heritage Tour, will take place October 6-11 guiding participants through the locations that played a pivotal role in Douglass’s transformation from a formerly enslaved man into an internationally recognized voice for freedom.
The six-day journey will retrace Douglass’s historic 1845-1846 lecture tour through Scotland and other parts of the British Isles. During that period, Douglass delivered hundreds of speeches advocating for the abolition of slavery and gained support from allies who ultimately helped secure his legal freedom.
According to organizers, the tour is designed to offer much more than sightseeing. Participants will explore key historical sites, visit archives, attend educational lectures, and engage in discussions connecting the struggles of the nineteenth-century abolitionist movement to contemporary issues of human rights and social justice.
Dr. Paulette Brown-Hinds, founder of Footsteps to Freedom, said Scotland was selected as the inaugural destination because of its profound importance in Douglass’s life.
Before arriving in Britain, Douglass was still legally considered property under United States law despite escaping slavery. By the time he returned home, he had become an internationally respected abolitionist whose voice carried significant influence on both sides of the Atlantic.
The tour will be led by Kenneth B. Morris Jr., the great-great-great-grandson of Frederick Douglass and co-founder of Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives. Joining him will be Celeste-Marie Bernier, a leading scholar of Douglass’s life, writings, and global impact.
Morris described the experience as an opportunity to connect travelers directly with a critical chapter in his ancestor’s story.
The launch of the travel club builds upon nearly three decades of heritage travel work by Footsteps to Freedom and the educational mission of Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, a nonprofit organization focused on combating modern-day slavery, human trafficking, and human rights abuses through education and advocacy.
Organizers say the Scotland tour is only the beginning. Future Frederick Douglass Travel Club experiences are expected to explore additional destinations connected to Black history, freedom movements, and the ongoing struggle for equality around the world.
Space for the inaugural Scotland tour is limited, with registration now open for travelers interested in experiencing history through the places where it unfolded.
