Vietnam is quickly gaining attention among young travelers looking to work, live, and explore abroad, with new search data suggesting the Southeast Asian nation is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to traditional working holiday destinations such as Australia.
According to research conducted by Global Work & Travel, searches for “flights to Vietnam” reached 462,000 in the past month, representing a 350% increase compared to the same period last year. The surge reflects a growing interest among graduates, remote workers, career changers, and long-term travelers who are seeking affordable ways to gain international experience.
For decades, countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea have dominated the working holiday conversation. However, rising living costs and changing economic realities are prompting many young people to reconsider their options.
Jürgen Himmelmann, co-founder of Global Work & Travel and DealsAway, believes Vietnam is benefiting from this shift in mindset.
“Australia has long been one of the classic routes for young people looking to work and travel abroad, but we are now seeing a shift in how travelers think about that first big move overseas,” Himmelmann said.
Vietnam’s appeal lies in its unique combination of affordability, employment opportunities, and lifestyle advantages. Cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Hoi An have become increasingly popular among English teachers, digital nomads, and remote workers seeking a lower-cost alternative to many Western destinations.
The country’s demand for English-language instructors has created opportunities for travelers with Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certifications, while its growing digital infrastructure has made it easier for remote workers to maintain international careers while living abroad.
“This is not just about cheaper flights or viral travel content,” Himmelmann explained. “It is about a wider shift in how young people are calculating the value of going abroad.”
He notes that today’s travelers are asking practical questions about affordability, career development, quality of life, and long-term sustainability. Rather than focusing solely on iconic destinations, many are looking for places where their income stretches further and where they can build meaningful life experiences without exhausting their savings.
Despite the growing interest, experts caution that relocating to Vietnam requires careful planning. Travelers are advised to research visa requirements, employment regulations, healthcare options, banking arrangements, and insurance coverage before making the move.
Global Work & Travel also recommends verifying the legitimacy of TEFL certification providers and researching living costs in specific cities, as expenses can vary significantly across the country.
“The search data shows the interest is clearly there,” Himmelmann said. “The next step is making sure travelers understand how to turn that interest into a realistic, safe, and well-planned move.”
As international work and travel opportunities continue to evolve, Vietnam appears poised to become one of the most talked-about destinations for a new generation seeking adventure, professional growth, and a more affordable path to living abroad.
