Drummer, entrepreneur, and businessman Ralph Rolle is taking his passion for storytelling beyond the stage with the launch of DearFamilyStories.com, a new digital platform designed to help families preserve their history, memories, recipes, and traditions for future generations.
Best known for performing with artists including Lady Gaga, Nile Rodgers and Chic, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Chaka Khan, Rolle has spent nearly five decades touring the world. His drumming has also been featured in major motion pictures, including Rocketman and The Devil Wears Prada II.
But Rolle says his newest venture is driven by something far more personal than music.
The inspiration for DearFamilyStories.com came after the death of his mother, when he realized how many family stories—and even cherished recipes—had been lost forever.
“Because I’m the youngest of four, there’s so much I didn’t know,” Rolle said. “The one thing I wish I had was her recipes, especially her chili. I started telling everyone: sit with your parents and talk to them about everything. Video the conversations. Don’t let anything get away.”
The new app serves as a digital archive where families can record oral histories, upload photographs and videos, organize family trees, and preserve treasured recipes in one secure location.
Among its features are voice-to-text transcription for recording conversations, read-aloud playback, multimedia storage, collaborative family pages, music integration, and an interactive family tree that allows users to map relationships across generations.
Rolle describes the family tree as more than a genealogy tool.
“It’s the visual heartbeat of your legacy,” he said. “Families are saying, ‘We matter. Our roots matter. And we’re going to make sure they are never forgotten.'”
The collaboration feature also allows relatives living around the world to contribute stories, photos, videos, and recipes, creating a shared archive that can continue growing over time.
DearFamilyStories.com marks the latest chapter in Rolle’s entrepreneurial journey. Three decades ago, he founded The Soul Snacks Cookie Company while living in the Bronx River Houses public housing development. The business eventually landed products on the shelves of Walmart and Kroger and even opened a store in Tokyo.
While those retail partnerships have since ended, Rolle says the company continues to operate through online sales, private-label partnerships, and catering relationships.
Rather than viewing those changes as setbacks, he sees them as lessons.
“Success is not a straight line,” Rolle said. “It’s a climb with ups and downs, twists and turns. What matters is that you keep climbing.”
Now, with DearFamilyStories.com officially available, Rolle hopes to encourage families to capture their stories before they disappear, preserving memories that he believes are every bit as valuable as financial wealth.
