Shyrone and Rebecca Richardson are offering couples a candid look at what it takes to build a lasting marriage in an era when social media can make relationships appear far more perfect than they are.
The pastoral marriage counselors have been married for more than 33 years, but their relationship began with a whirlwind courtship. The couple married just three weeks after meeting. Today, after decades of marriage and more than 20 years spent counseling couples, they have turned their experiences into a new book, Winning Together: 8 Keys to Building a Thriving Marriage.
Published by High Point Executive Publishing, the book combines pastoral guidance with practical lessons drawn from the Richardsons’ own relationship and their work with couples. The authors focus on the idea that successful marriages are not built by avoiding challenges, but by developing habits that help partners navigate them together.
The book examines eight foundational areas of marriage, including communication, conflict resolution and maintaining faith at the center of a relationship. Each chapter includes concise “Game Plans,” giving couples practical action steps they can revisit as their relationships evolve.
The Richardsons say their own marriage has included its share of challenges, making their message one grounded in experience rather than an idealized version of romance.
“We’ve seen a lot of marriages fall apart, and we believe that our story can bring hope to any marriage,” Shyrone Richardson said. “We’ve been married over 30 years and have gone through more tests and trials than most, and yet, we are more in love now than when we first met.”
Their approach also addresses the expectations created by social media, where couples often share carefully selected photographs and milestones while leaving out the disagreements, financial pressures, personal struggles and other difficulties that can test a long-term relationship.
Rather than focusing on presenting a perfect marriage, the Richardsons emphasize intentionality, perseverance, faith and a willingness to continue growing together.
“Our hope is that these principles help couples build marriages that are not only enduring but deeply fulfilling,” Rebecca Richardson said. “Marriage isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about choosing each other, over and over again, even when life gives you a thousand reasons not to.”
The Richardsons are the founders and pastors of Truth Church in Jersey City, New Jersey. Their nondenominational ministry serves people across racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, with a focus on biblical teaching and developing a personal relationship with Christ.
Through their ministry, the couple has spent more than two decades teaching, mentoring and counseling couples. Their goal is to provide practical guidance that can help partners strengthen their relationships and build marriages capable of weathering different seasons of life.
Winning Together: 8 Keys to Building a Thriving Marriage was released June 22, 2026. For the Richardsons, their unusual three-week courtship is only the beginning of the story. The lessons they now share are rooted in the much longer journey that followed: more than three decades of choosing to grow, communicate and move forward together.
